End of Use Instructions

End-of-Use Instructions

From the beginning, Pelli products are designed with the end in mind.  We we design pieces to be used often, repaired where possible, and enjoyed for years. When something reaches the end of its useful life, here are the best next steps.

1) Choose the best option first

RepairRepurposePass it onRecycle/CompostGeneral waste (last resort)

2) Separate what you can

If you’re able, remove and sort parts before disposal:

  • Metal hardware (zips, sliders, buckles, rivets, snaps)

  • Velcro, labels and trims

  • Natural fibre body (jute/cotton canvas)

  • Technical layers (insulated/lining layers such as TPU/soft plastics)

3) Follow the pathway for your materials

Natural fibres (jute, cotton canvas):
Once non-fibre elements are removed, cut fabric into smaller pieces and compost where appropriate.

Waxed canvas:
Designed for longevity. Re-waxing helps extend life. If it truly reaches end-of-use, commercial composting may be suitable where available. If not, dispose via general waste.

Linings / insulation layers (e.g., TPU or soft-plastic components):
These are not suitable for home composting. If your area has a verified soft-plastics collection point, use that. If not, general waste is the correct last resort.

Metal parts:
Recycle via metal recycling/scrap facilities where available.

Glass:
Recycle via household recycling where accepted locally.

Silicone:
Not accepted in kerbside recycling. Keep in use as long as possible, then look for a specialist recycling/take-back program where available.

End-of-Use Instructions by Style

Tote Bags (Beach, Shopping, Market)

Pelli totes are made from natural cotton canvas, jute, or waxed canvas depending on the style.

Waxed Canvas Tote Bags

  • Best option: keep in use as long as possible (waxed canvas is chosen for longevity).

  • At end of use:

    • Remove metal hardware where possible (zips, sliders).

    • If you have access to commercial composting, that’s the preferred end-of-use pathway for waxed canvas components.

    • If not, use general waste as last resort.

Canvas Tote Bags

  • Remove hardware where possible.

  • Cotton canvas components: cut into smaller pieces and compost where appropriate (e.g., FOGO/home compost conditions vary by household).

Jute Tote Bags

  • Remove hardware where possible.

  • Jute components: cut/shred into smaller pieces and compost where appropriate.

Crossbody Bag and Duffle Bag

Crossbody Bags

Some crossbody styles are waxed canvas and include removable straps/hardware.

  • Remove metal hardware where possible for reuse/metal recycling.

  • If the body is waxed canvas, follow the Waxed Canvas pathway above.

  • If the body is cotton canvas, follow the Canvas pathway above.

Duffle Bags

Pelli duffles include cotton canvas styles and waxed canvas styles.

  • Remove hardware where possible for reuse/metal recycling.

  • Cotton canvas panels (including cotton lining where applicable): compost where appropriate once non-fibre elements are removed.

  • Waxed canvas duffles: follow the Waxed Canvas pathway.

Premium Tote (Cork Lined)

Premium/Deluxe tote styles include natural cork lining with a natural outer (canvas or jute).

  • Remove metal hardware where possible.

  • Natural outer (canvas/jute): compost where appropriate once non-fibre elements are removed.

  • Cork lining: best outcomes are repurpose (liners, craft, drawer lining) or compost where appropriate if untreated; if coated/treated, use general waste as last resort.

Insulated Bags (Cooler, Lunch, Wine, Kids Lunch)

Insulated ranges are typically mixed-material: natural outers (jute/canvas/waxed canvas) paired with technical internal layers (e.g., recyclable TPU / BTPU lining and insulation layers).

General rule for all insulated bags

  1. Remove hardware (zips, sliders, clips) where possible.

  2. Separate the outer from internal layers if you can do so safely.

  3. Follow the pathway below based on your outer:

Jute Outer (Cooler/Lunch/Wine/Kids Lunch)

  • Jute outer: compost where appropriate once non-fibre parts are removed.

  • Internal lining/insulation: not home compostable. If your area has a verified specialist recycling option for the lining material, use it; otherwise general waste last.

Waxed Canvas Outer (Cooler/Lunch/Wine/Kids Lunch)

  • Waxed canvas outer: prioritise long use; at end of use, commercial composting where available; otherwise general waste last.

  • Internal lining/insulation: follow the same lining pathway above.

Canvas Outer (Cooler/Lunch/Wine/Kids Lunch)

  • Cotton canvas outer: compost where appropriate once non-fibre elements are removed.

  • Internal lining/insulation: follow the same lining pathway above.

Important (Australia): soft-plastics acceptance varies by council and program availability. Use language like “check for a verified local collection point” rather than naming a single scheme.

Picnic Blanket (Made from RPET blend)

Pelli picnic blankets are woven from a recycled blend including recycled cotton and RPET (from plastic bottles).

  • Repair/repurpose first (outdoor rug, beach blanket, car blanket, pet blanket).

  • At end of use:

    • Because it’s a blended woven textile, kerbside recycling isn’t suitable.

    • Use a textile reuse / donation pathway if still usable.

    • If your area offers textile recycling, use that; otherwise general waste last.

Removable Straps (RPET)

Some straps are made from recycled RPET with metal hardware.

  • Reuse first (as replacement straps, repairs, luggage identifiers).

  • At end of use:

    • Remove and recycle metal hardware via metal recycling where available.

    • Strap textile: donate/repurpose where possible; textile recycling only if available locally.

Silicone

Pelli has a dedicated silicone range (used for long life and repeat use).

  • Keep in use as long as possible.

  • At end of use:

    • Silicone isn’t accepted in kerbside recycling.

    • Use a specialist recycling/take-back option if available in your area; otherwise general waste last.

Stainless Steel

Pelli drinkware is made from 304 stainless steel (bottles / tumblers / cups).

  • Pass it on if still usable.

  • At end of use:

    • Recycle via metal recycling/scrap facilities where available (not kerbside).

Hats (Natural Cotton)

Pelli hats are made from 100% natural cotton (polyester/nylon-free).

  • Repair/repurpose/donate first.

  • At end of use:

    • If the hat is all-cotton (and trims are removed where possible), compost may be suitable in some systems; otherwise use textile recycling (if available) or general waste last.

Ice Packs

Pelli ice packs include washable recycled PET (RPET) fabric covers and can be used as cold or heat packs.

  • Keep using as long as possible (multi-use extends life).

  • At end of use:

    • Remove the RPET cover (repurpose/donate where possible; textile recycling if available).

    • Dispose of the inner pack in line with local council guidance (acceptance varies by region and pack type).
